100 Murals in 100 Counties of North Carolina

Paint NC: 100 Murals in 100 Counties is a statewide public art initiative by artist Max Dowdle dedicated to honoring North Carolina’s people, places, and overlooked histories through large-scale murals. Each work is rooted in local narrative, celebrating educators, civic leaders, cultural figures, and collective identities that have shaped their communities. Installed in prominent public spaces, the murals transform everyday streetscapes into sites of remembrance and pride. Together, the project forms a growing visual archive for North Carolina, affirming that every county carries a story worthy of visibility, permanence, and care.
