Paint NC: 3 of 100 – The Heart of Smithfield (Smithfield, Johnston County, NC)

Project Location: In the center of downtown Smithfield, 398 East Market Street, Smithfield, NC.

Project Overview: The Heart of Smithfield mural is part of Paint NC: 100 Murals in 100 Counties, artist Max Dowdle’s statewide public art initiative dedicated to honoring local identity through large-scale civic portraiture. Installed in downtown Smithfield at the intersection of Fourth Street North and Market Street, the mural occupies a prominent position within the town’s historic core, transforming a familiar commercial façade into a visual anchor for community memory.

Rather than centering on a single historical figure, Heart of Smithfield operates as a collective portrait, an affirmation of the people, labor, and shared rhythms that define the town. The mural’s imagery draws together past and present, using symbolic elements to reflect Smithfield’s resilience, continuity, and everyday dignity. Its scale and placement assert that local stories deserve the same monumentality traditionally reserved for distant or abstract narratives.

The project was realized through collaboration with local arts organizations and civic partners, reinforcing the mural’s role as both artwork and communal investment. Unveiled through a public dedication, the mural invites residents and visitors alike to pause, recognize themselves within the work, and reconsider the emotional and historical center of the town.As part of the broader Legacy NC series, Heart of Smithfield advances the project’s core mission: to reframe public space as a site of recognition, pride, and shared authorship – where the heart of a community is made visible, durable, and impossible to overlook.
