Paint NC: 5 of 100 – Special Forces Soldier (Spring Lake, Cumberland County, NC)

Project Location: Downtown Spring Lake, 498 South Main Street, Spring Lake, NC.

Project Overview: The Special Forces Soldier mural in Spring Lake, North Carolina, is a public art tribute honoring the presence, sacrifice, and quiet discipline of U.S. Army Special Forces. Painted by Max Dowdle and unveiled in conjunction with Veterans Day observances, the mural occupies a prominent site along South Main Street, embedding military recognition directly into the town’s daily visual life. Its placement reflects Spring Lake’s deep and ongoing relationship with nearby Fort Liberty/Bragg and the generations of service members who have lived, trained, and returned home through this community.

Rather than presenting spectacle or action, the mural centers on composure and resolve. The Special Forces figure is rendered with clarity and restraint, emphasizing professionalism, endurance, and moral weight over dramatization. This approach honors not only those currently serving, but also the long lineage of veterans whose contributions are often defined by silence rather than public acknowledgment.

The project was realized through collaboration between the artist, town leadership, veterans’ organizations, and private supporters, reinforcing its role as a collective civic gesture. As part of Spring Lake’s growing Arts Trail, the mural expands the language of public remembrance beyond monuments and plaques, offering a living, visible form of gratitude.

Within Dowdle’s broader public work, the Special Forces Soldier mural posits that service is not an abstraction, indeed it is local, personal, and deserving of daily recognition in the shared spaces of community life.
