Project Location: Havelock, North Carolina
Client: Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point
Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point (MCAS Cherry Point) is a United States Marine Corps airfield located near Havelock, North Carolina. Established in 1941, it serves as a key aviation facility for the Marine Corps. MCAS Cherry Point is known for its strategic location on the East Coast and is a major installation supporting both air and ground elements of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF).
As an artist asked to contribute to the renovation of the new Marine Corp Public House at the Cherry Point Marine Base, I brought to life a compelling series of graffiti-style murals that tell the story of bravery, unity, and are just plain fun. Each mural, infused with the rebellious energy of graffiti art, becomes a visual testament to the unique spirit of the Marine Corps, capturing the essence of R and R that permeates the Public House.
In crafting the painted detail work throughout the establishment, my intention is to seamlessly blend functionality with the staccato aesthetic of the graffiti murals. Each element serves as a visual guide for patrons, embodying the fusion of discipline and creativity that characterizes the Marines. Additionally, the installation of vinyl wall quotes is a deliberate artistic choice to infuse the space with motivational and inspirational messages culled from popular movies. From my perspective, these bold typography quotes serve as visual anchors, instilling a sense of purpose and fostering camaraderie among the patrons. Through the combination of graffiti-style murals, painted details, and vinyl wall quotes, the design team and I transformed the Marine Corp Public House into a dynamic and visually stimulating haven at the heart of Cherry Point Marine Base, where the artistic expression resonates with the very spirit of the Marines.
