Project Location: NCMNS, Raleigh, NC
Client: North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
What a treat it was to work on this mural! The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is the preeminent scientific destination in not only the Triangle region of North Carolina, but in our estimation, the whole of the South. The extensive museum occupies nearly a whole city block in downtown Raleigh, and we were thrilled when approached to create a new teaching mural in the discovery room. The mission was to create a link between modern birds of the South, and the ancient dinosaur inhabitants of the region. We also got to incorporate the three-dimensional element of a dinosaur’s nest into the base of the mural.
This mural was demanding in the sense that we needed to synthesize a wealth of scientific data from several input vectors into a final product that worked aesthetically. Demanding, but very gratifying. The staff of scientists was a treat to work with, as they all represent of font of specialized knowledge and were not afraid to make their thoughts known when it came to representing flora or fauna accurately.
