Project Location: On the side of the newly renovated Carteret Community Theatre, 1311 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC.
Project Overview: The mural on the side of the Carteret Community Theatre in Morehead City, North Carolina, is part of Max Dowdle’s Paint NC: 100 Murals in 100 Counties initiative, a statewide effort to honor local identity through large-scale public art. Installed on the theatre’s Arendell Street façade, the mural occupies a prominent cultural site, bridging visual art with one of the county’s most enduring performing arts institutions.
The composition functions as a collective portrait of Carteret County, drawing together symbols of coastal life, creativity, and community continuity. Rather than focusing on a single figure or historical moment, the mural weaves multiple narratives, celebrating the region’s relationship to water, leisure, storytelling, and shared civic space. Its multi-panel structure mirrors the layered nature of the county itself, where history, tourism, labor, and artistic expression intersect.
By situating the mural on a working community theatre, the project emphasizes art as an active, lived practice rather than a static monument. The exterior wall becomes an extension of the performances and gatherings that take place inside, reinforcing the theatre’s role as a cultural anchor.
As part of the Paint NC series, the Carteret Community Theatre mural expands the project’s scope beyond portraiture into place-based storytelling. It asserts that counties are defined not only by individuals, but by the institutions and creative ecosystems that sustain community life across generations.
