Project Location: Hillsborough, NC
Client: Town of Hillsborough
As the very first mural in historic downtown Hillsborough the owners of Volume Records and Beer, and the building owners at Margaret Lane Gallery knew that they needed something special. Luckily Anthony, record slinger extraordinaire at Volume, already had an idea to feature the one and only Billy Strayhorn on the side of his business. Billy Strayhorn, songwriter for Duke Ellington, and local hero, has a commemorative plaque less than a block away. It was a no-brainer to feature such an affable face on the wall, and after many design iterations we hit on just the right design. Colorful, and engaging, “Take the ‘A’ Train” has become an indelible part of the Hillsborough landscape. A special “Thanks” goes out to the town planners, the arts commission and Shannan Campbell for shepherding this project to fruition.
