Project Location: Quorum Center, Raleigh, NC
Client: Local Government Federal Credit Union, Civic, Davis Kane
In February of 2020 NC Public Art was contracted to create 8 monumental oil paintings telling the story of the people and places of North Carolina to go into the newly renovated Quorum Center in downtown Raleigh, and then…the Pandemic hit.
Luckily, these works were mobile, and being that art can sometimes be a solitary venture, this gave us plenty to work on while under Lockdown. Thanks to the awesome director, Katie Murray, at the Eno Arts Mill in Hillsborough we were able to rent a large mill space to house the works while they were being created. Upon completion they went into climate controlled storage until the building was ready for them. Today we’re happy to say they are installed, and look fabulous!
The team at LGFCU, Davis Kane, and by extension the contractors were all fantastic to work with at every step of the process. The art went through many design iterations until we were happy to move forward. This art stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of every North Carolinian. As the viewer moves from left to right, from mountains to sea, they take in the familiar sights of Asheville, small mountain towns, Raleigh, Durham, New Bern, and other coastal sights. Along the way are portraits of everyday citizens, as well as local flora. Each panel is 5.5′ x 8.5′, for a full width of ~45′.
If you’re on West Jones Street in Raleigh pop in and view the work on the ground floor, or even better, check it out at night where the expertly placed lighting really makes the colors sing.
