An Unlikely Refugee

Project Location: NCMNS, Raleigh, NC
Client: North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

In 2014 artist Max Dowdle and poet/writer Morrow Dowdle united to create a graphic novel based upon the life of George the Python. This was eventually expanded into a full, permanent exhibit at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. From the book jacket:

“In the earliest days of the Vietnam War, a Burmese python is rescued by U.S. Army Special Forces and becomes and unofficial member of their unit before immigrating under secret circumstances to America. ‘George,’ as the python was named, subsequently lived in the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences as a star attraction for nearly 30 years. An Unlikely Refugee combines fact and fantasy to chronicle George’s extraordinary life from birth until death, relating the complete story from the snake’s perspective.”

The museum acquired all original artwork used in the book for a permanent and travel exhibition. Orders for the book can be made HERE.
